"When should I go fishing today?" is the question every angler asks before the alarm goes off. There is no magic answer, but there is a fast routine that stacks the odds in your favor. It takes about five minutes.
Solunar theory expects more fish activity when the moon is overhead or underfoot (major periods, about two hours) and when it rises or sets (minor periods, about one hour). Open the Solunar app and look at today's arcs on the 24-hour dial. New to the idea? Start with our practical guide to solunar theory.
A window that overlaps sunrise or sunset is worth more than one at noon. Low light is already prime time for most species, so when a major or minor period lines up with it you get two reasons to be on the water. The app marks these with a small dot. We explain how to compare them in major vs minor periods.
Not every day is equal. The 1 to 4 star rating combines moon phase, perigee and stacked windows, as covered in moon phases and feeding. On a four-star day, make the effort. On a one-star day, you can still catch fish, just don't skip family plans for it.
The moon is only one input. Before you commit, look at:
Choose a single window, ideally a major one with a sun bonus, and arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. Fish often start feeding as the window opens, and a quiet approach beats a rushed one. Turn on alerts (Premium) and Solunar will ping you 30 minutes before each top window.
Say today's major period runs 6:10 to 8:10 and sunrise is at 6:45. That window covers first light, it's a major, and it has a sun bonus: fish it. A minor at 1 p.m. in bright sun is your backup, not your plan.
Solunar windows are a way to decide when to go, not a guarantee. If you want the honest view of the evidence, read does solunar theory actually work?.
