Turkey hunting tips: the best time to hunt turkeys, from roost to noon

Practical turkey hunting tips: the best time of day and season to hunt turkeys, roosting, calling, setup, weather and moon, for spring and fall seasons.

Turkey hunting is a game of timing. A gobbler that hammers on the roost at dawn can go silent by 7 am and walk in quietly at 10. Knowing when turkeys do what is most of the battle.

Best time of the season

Season dates and legal hours vary by state. In many states, spring shooting hours end at noon or 1 pm.

Best time of day

  1. Before sunrise: turkeys gobble on the roost from first light. Be in place at least 30–45 minutes before sunrise, close but not too close (about 100–150 yards in open woods).
  2. Fly-down (around sunrise): the moment of truth. Toms often fly down toward hens they hear.
  3. Mid morning (9–11 am): hens leave toms to nest, and gobblers start looking again. Some of the easiest kills come now.
  4. Midday: quieter but productive where legal, especially in strutting fields.
  5. Evening: scout where birds go to roost. In states that allow afternoon hunting, set up on the route to the roost.

Roosting: the night-before trick

The best way to start a morning is knowing where a gobbler went to bed. At dusk, listen from a ridge or road for gobbles, or use an owl hooter or crow call to provoke a shock gobble. Then slip in before daylight the next morning.

Weather

Does the moon matter for turkeys?

Some hunters say turkeys gobble earlier and more on the roost under a bright full moon, and that birds fly down a bit later after a dark night. The evidence is anecdotal, but the solunar windows are still a good tiebreaker: a major or minor period in the first hours after sunrise often matches the mid-morning surge when hens leave the gobblers.

Quick plan

  1. Roost a bird the evening before.
  2. Set up before first light with the sun behind you if possible.
  3. Stay put until at least 10 am, longer if legal.
  4. Use the solunar forecast to choose your days off.

Solunar gives you sunrise, legal light, moon and every window, offline, so you know when to be on the roost and when to stay patient.
