Best time to hunt deer: time of day, season, weather and moon

The best time to hunt deer, layer by layer: the best weeks of the season, the best time of day, the weather that gets deer on their feet, and how moon and solunar windows fit in.

"When should I hunt?" has four answers stacked on top of each other: the right weeks, the right days, the right hours and the right minutes. Get the first three right and the fourth takes care of itself.

Best time of the season

For whitetails in most of the US, the best stretch of the season is late October through mid November:

Exact dates depend on where you hunt: see when is the rut for regional timing.

Best time of day

Deer are crepuscular: most active at dawn and dusk.

Typical daily patterns are explained in deer feeding times, and legal hours in best hunting times today.

Best weather to hunt deer

  1. Cold fronts. The first day or two after a front passes, with falling temperatures and rising pressure, usually bring the best daytime movement.
  2. Temperature drops. A drop of 10°F or more below the recent average gets deer up earlier in the evening.
  3. Light wind (5–12 mph). Steady wind lets you play it; very strong wind makes deer nervous and bedded.
  4. Light rain or the end of a storm. Deer often move right after a long rain stops. See deer hunting in the rain.
  5. Avoid warm spells. Unseasonably warm weather pushes movement into the dark.

Where the moon fits in

The moon doesn't change which weeks are good, but it can change which hours deer move:

When a major falls within an hour of sunrise or sunset, the two effects stack. That's the best window of the day. More in deer hunting and the moon.

Putting it together: a simple checklist

Solunar puts all four layers on one screen: the 30-day forecast with day ratings, sunrise, sunset and legal light, the moon and the major and minor periods, calculated offline for your exact stand.
