Deer hunting and the moon: does moon phase affect deer movement?

What hunters report about moon phase and deer movement, what research says, and how to use solunar windows on your stand days.

Ask a deer hunter about the moon and you'll get strong opinions. Some swear by a full moon killing daytime movement, others hunt every major period they can find. So does moon phase affect deer movement? Here is a balanced take.

What hunters report

The common claims are:

What research suggests

Studies on moon phase and deer movement have been mixed. The effect, when found, is small next to the things that clearly drive deer: season, food, hunting pressure, temperature and, in autumn, the rut. So the moon should never be the reason you skip a good wind and a good stand.

Where the moon can help

Where it helps is choosing between similar days. You have limited sits, so use the moon as a tiebreaker:

  1. Pick the stand day with a high rating from the day rating.
  2. Find a solunar window that overlaps first or last light. That's when deer are moving anyway, and a major or minor on top adds a second reason. This is the "sun bonus" explained in major vs minor periods.
  3. Stay for the whole window. Midday movement, especially during the rut, can fall inside a major period.

The rut and the moon

Many hunters time the rut by the moon, but the breeding peak is driven mainly by daylight length, so it falls around the same dates each year. The moon may shift when during the day bucks move rather than which weeks they rut. Use the calendar for the weeks and the app for the hours.

A practical plan

Running into a different quarry? The same method works for wild boar.
