Muskie fishing tips: fall muskie, best lures, figure eights and the moon

Muskie fishing tips: why fall is the best season for big muskie, where to find them, top lures (bucktails, jerkbaits, suckers), the figure eight, best weather and time of day, moon phases and top states.

The muskellunge, or muskie, is called "the fish of 10,000 casts" for a reason. It's the biggest predator in many northern lakes and rivers, it follows lures without biting and it can disappear for days. But when everything lines up, it hits like a freight train. Fall is when the biggest muskies feed hardest. These muskie fishing tips will help you put the odds in your favor.

Where to fish for muskie

Why fall is muskie season

As the water cools in October and November, muskies feed heavily to build reserves for winter. Fish move to predictable spots near baitfish and the biggest females of the year are often caught in the last weeks of open water.

Season Pattern
Spring Shallow bays after spawning; smaller lures, many closed seasons
Summer Weed edges, rock reefs, suspended fish; fish early, late or at night
Fall Prime time: big fish on deep weed edges, rocks, breaks near baitfish; big baits and live suckers
Late fall Slow presentations near deep structure until ice-up

Check season dates for your state and lake; many have catch-and-release rules or high minimum sizes.

Where muskies hold

  1. Weed edges (especially cabbage weeds) next to deep water.
  2. Rock reefs and points with access to deep water.
  3. Breaks near baitfish schools (ciscoes, suckers, perch).
  4. River current seams behind structure.

Best lures

The figure eight

Muskies often follow a lure to the boat without striking. Always finish every cast with a figure eight: keep the lure moving in a big oval next to the boat, with your rod tip deep in the water. Many fish strike in the last moments. Never just lift the lure out.

Does the moon matter for muskie?

Muskie anglers take the moon seriously. Many trophy fish are caught around the full and new moon, and especially during moonrise and moonset windows. Serious muskie hunters plan their days around these solunar periods because muskies feed in short bursts. Read more in major vs minor periods.
