Deer hunting in the rain: do deer move, and when should you go?

Do deer move in the rain? What light rain, heavy rain and the end of a storm do to deer movement, the best stands for wet days, scent and gear tips, and how to time a rainy hunt.

Plenty of hunters stay home when it rains. That's a mistake, at least some of the time. Deer don't stop living when it gets wet, and some of the best movement of the season comes during and right after a rain.

Do deer move in the rain?

Yes, and how much depends on the kind of rain:

Conditions Deer movement What to do
Light rain or drizzle Normal to good. Deer feed and move much like on a cloudy day. Hunt as usual.
Steady moderate rain Somewhat reduced, especially in the open. Field edges, trails close to cover.
Heavy rain, wind, storms Low. Deer bed in thick cover or under conifers. Stay dry and be ready for when it ends.
Right after a long rain Often excellent. Deer get up to feed. Get in the stand as soon as it eases.

The window right after the rain stops is the one to plan around. After hours bedded, deer are hungry, and the forest is quiet and full of scent.

Why rain can help the hunter

Rain and the rut

During the rut, bucks keep looking for does in the rain. A drizzly November morning can be excellent. Check scrapes after a rain: bucks often freshen them as soon as it stops. When the rut peaks in your area is in when is the rut.

Rain, fronts and pressure

Rain usually comes with a low-pressure system. Deer often move more before a front arrives (falling pressure) and again after it passes (rising pressure and cooler air). The day after a cold rain, with clearing skies and a north wind, is a classic big-buck day. The pressure side is explained in deer movement forecast.

Where to sit on rainy days

Avoid wide-open ridges in wind-driven rain: deer won't be there.

Gear and safety

Timing a rainy hunt

  1. Check the hourly forecast for when the rain stops.
  2. Be in the stand 30 minutes before.
  3. If a solunar window or the last hour of light falls right after the rain, that's your best sit of the week.

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon and solunar periods together, offline, so you can line up the end of the rain with the best hour of the day.
