Elk rut 2027: when it peaks, the best time to hunt elk and the moon
When is the elk rut? Rut phases and peak bugling dates in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and beyond, plus elk hunting tips on thermals, calling and the moon.
Few sounds in North America match a bull elk bugling across a September basin. The elk rut is when big bulls drop their guard, gather cows and answer calls, and it is the season most archery hunters plan the whole year around. Here's when it happens, how it unfolds and how to hunt it.
When is the elk rut?
The rut is driven mainly by photoperiod (shortening days), so its timing is remarkably consistent from year to year.
Phase
Typical dates
What bulls do
Pre-rut
late August – early September
Velvet is gone, bulls spar and start bugling, bachelor groups split
Early rut
~September 5–15
Herd bulls gather cows; satellite bulls test them
Peak rut
~September 15 – October 1
Most cows come into estrus; bugling and chasing at their height
Post-rut
October
Tired bulls feed and rest; a second smaller wave for late cows
Peak bugling in most of the Rockies falls in the third and fourth weeks of September. Elevation, weather and herd structure shift it by a few days, not weeks.
Where: the big elk states
Colorado: the largest elk herd in the country; dark timber, aspens and high basins.
Montana and Wyoming: classic backcountry hunts, from the Bob Marshall to the country around Yellowstone.
Idaho: steep, rugged terrain with good public access.
New Mexico, Arizona, Utah: famous for trophy bulls, mostly through limited draw tags.
Oregon and Washington: Rocky Mountain elk in the east, Roosevelt elk in the west coast forests.
Season structures and tags differ a lot between states and units. Check your state wildlife agency for dates, draws and rules.
Best time to hunt elk (time of day)
First light to mid-morning: bulls are vocal as they move from feeding meadows to bedding timber. Your best window.
Midday: bulls bed on cool, north-facing slopes and dark timber. A quiet approach to a wallow or bedding area can work, but it's the slow time.
Last two hours of light: elk move back out to feed; bugling picks up again.
Night: much of the rut happens in the dark, especially around a bright full moon.
Thermals and wind: the real key
Elk live by their noses. In the mountains, thermals matter as much as the forecast wind:
Morning: cool air sinks, so scent flows downhill until the sun warms the slope.
Mid-morning to afternoon: warming air rises, scent flows uphill.
Evening: as the slope cools, scent goes downhill again.
So come in from above in the morning and from below in the afternoon, and carry a wind checker. Our guide on deer hunting in wind explains wind speed and direction in more detail; the thermal rules are the same.
Elk hunting tips for the rut
Locate before you call. Use a locate bugle or cow call at dawn from a ridge and listen.
Get close, then call. Calling from 100–200 yards gets a herd bull to respond much more than from a mile away.
Use cow calls to pull satellites, and challenge bugles carefully on herd bulls.
Set up the caller behind the shooter so the bull hangs up out of range of the caller, not the shooter.
Hunt wallows and water in hot, dry Septembers.
Be in shape. Elk country is steep; the hunter who can get one more ridge often wins.
Does the moon affect the elk rut?
The rut's timing is set by daylight, not the moon. But the moon can change when elk are active:
Around a full moon, elk may feed and rut more at night, and bugling at dawn can quiet sooner. Midday and evening hunts can be better.
Around a new moon, dawn activity is often stronger.
Daily solunar windows that fall in the first or last hour of light add a bonus.
Elk rut about six to eight weeks before the whitetail rut, which peaks in November in most of the US. Many hunters bowhunt elk in September and then come home for whitetails. See when is the rut.
Plan it with Solunar
The Solunar app calculates sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the day's major and minor windows from your exact GPS position, offline, which is exactly what you need in a wilderness with no signal. The 1–4 star rating helps you decide which days to push hardest.
