Shed hunting tips: when deer and elk drop antlers, where to look and the rules
Shed hunting tips for whitetail, mule deer and elk: when bucks drop antlers, best places to find sheds (bedding, food, trails, south slopes), how to search, dogs, and state shed-hunting closures in Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and more.
Shed hunting is the fifth season of the deer year. After the rut and the cold of winter, bucks and bulls drop their antlers, and hunters head out to find them. It's a great excuse to walk your hunting ground, learn where deer spend the winter and see which bucks survived. These shed hunting tips will help you find more antlers.
When do deer and elk drop antlers?
Antlers fall when testosterone drops after the rut. Timing depends on the animal's age, health, food and the severity of the winter.
Species
Main drop period
Notes
Whitetail deer
Late December–March, peak in February
Healthy mature bucks often hold longer; stress makes them drop earlier
Mule deer
February–April
Most drop in March on winter range
Elk
March–April
Bulls drop on winter range before moving up
Moose
December–February
Earlier than deer
Don't go too early. Walking through bedding areas in January can push deer off your property while they're still in survival mode. Many hunters wait until most bucks have dropped, which you can check with trail cameras.
Where to look
Sheds are found where animals spend the most time in winter:
Bedding areas: thick cover, south-facing slopes, conifer thickets and CRP grass. A buck often drops one side where it stands up.
Food sources: standing corn and beans, food plots, cut fields, browse. Bucks spend hours here every day.
Trails between bed and food, especially where trails cross fences, ditches and creeks: the jump can knock a loose antler off.
South-facing slopes: warmer in winter, with less snow and early green-up.
Winter range for elk and mule deer: low sage flats, foothills and wind-blown ridges.
How to search
Walk slowly and grid an area. Sheds are easy to miss in grass and leaves.
Look for pieces, not a whole antler: a tine, the curve of a beam, the white of the base.
Search on cloudy days or with the sun behind you: less glare, better contrast.
Go after the snow melts and before the spring green-up hides antlers.
Use binoculars in open country to glass for the white glint of antlers.
Shed dogs
Dogs trained on antler scent can find sheds people walk past. Labs and other retrievers are popular. Start a puppy with an antler in fetch games and build up to hidden sheds.
Shed hunting rules by state
Many Western states protect wintering animals by closing public lands to shed hunting in winter and early spring:
Wyoming: shed antler collection is restricted on public land west of the Continental Divide during the winter months.
Utah: requires a free shed antler gathering ethics course during part of the year.
Colorado: closes public lands in the west of the state to shed hunting during winter and spring.
Idaho, Montana, Nevada and others have closures on specific wildlife management areas and winter ranges.
Some states regulate the sale of antlers, picking up dead heads ("deadheads") or using vehicles off-road. Rules change often: always check your state wildlife agency's current regulations and get landowner permission on private land.
What sheds tell you
Which bucks survived the hunting season and winter.
Where they winter: useful for next year's late-season hunt.
Antler growth: matching sheds year to year shows how a buck is maturing.
Pair your shed finds with trail camera pictures and with what you saw during the post-rut and late season.
Practical tips
Mark every shed on a map: patterns emerge over the years.
Search the same spots more than once: antlers fall at different times.
Respect wintering wildlife: don't push animals that are short on energy.
Wear bright clothes during spring turkey and predator seasons.
Plan with Solunar
Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and solunar windows on one 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating, for your exact property, offline. Use it to plan scouting walks when deer are bedded, and to learn when the bucks you found sheds from move each day.
