Trout fishing in winter: best times, flies, baits and where to go

Trout fishing in winter made simple: the best time of day, water temperatures, midges and nymphs, baits and lures, tailwaters and spring creeks, plus safety on cold rivers.

Winter is the quietest season on a trout stream, and that's half the appeal: empty parking lots, no hatchery crowds and trout that will still feed if you slow down. Trout are cold-water fish. They don't stop eating in winter, they just eat smaller, slower and at different hours. Here's how to catch them from December to March.

How cold water changes trout

Trout are most active at roughly 50–60°F. As water drops toward the 30s, their metabolism slows down:

Water temperature Trout behavior
Above 45°F Feeding regularly; nymphs and small streamers work
38–45°F Slower; feeding windows shorten to the warmest hours
Below 38°F Sluggish; fish hold deep and slow, eat only easy food that drifts close

A cheap stream thermometer will tell you more than any fly box. Even a two-degree rise in the afternoon can switch fish on.

Best time of day to fish for trout in winter

Forget dawn. In winter, the best window is usually late morning to mid-afternoon, roughly 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the sun has warmed the water a little. Sunny days after a cold snap, and mild, overcast days with a light drizzle, are both good. The first warm days of a thaw can bring a midge hatch and rising fish. Where trout hold in winter

Fish won't move far to eat, so cover the water thoroughly: many drifts through the same seam.

Best winter trout waters

Tailwaters and spring creeks stay at stable temperatures all year and fish best in winter:

Seasons and rules vary: some streams are catch-and-release only in winter.

Winter flies

Tight-line or indicator nymphing with lighter tippet (5X–6X) is the most productive method. More technique in fly fishing for trout.

Baits and lures

If you spin-fish, slow down:

Does the moon matter?

In winter, water temperature and sun matter more than moon phase. Still, many anglers plan around a solunar period falling in the warm midday window: when the two overlap, it's the time to be on the best run. Read how to read solunar tables.

Plan your day with Solunar

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and solunar windows on a 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating, for your exact stream and offline (handy in canyons with no signal). In winter, look for good ratings with a window between late morning and afternoon.
