Yellow perch fishing tips: best time, baits, rigs and ice fishing for perch

Yellow perch fishing tips: when perch bite best through the seasons, finding schools, minnows and waxworms, perch rigs and jigs, ice fishing for jumbo perch, top lakes in the Great Lakes and Midwest, and the moon.

Yellow perch are one of the most popular fish in the northern US: easy to find once you locate a school, fun on light tackle and arguably the best-tasting freshwater fish there is. They bite year-round, including through the ice. These yellow perch fishing tips will help you find the schools and fill the bucket.

Where yellow perch live

Yellow perch are found across the northern half of the US and Canada. Famous perch waters include:

Best time of year

Season Where perch are
Early spring Shallow bays and weedlines before and after spawning (water 45–50 °F)
Summer Deeper weed edges, rock-to-sand transitions, 15–30 ft or more in big lakes
Fall Schools tighten up and feed heavily; excellent fishing
Winter (ice) Mud flats, basin edges and weedlines; some of the best perch fishing of the year

Best time of day

Perch are daytime feeders. They feed most in the morning and late afternoon, often right up until dusk, and go quiet at night (unlike walleye). On cloudy days the bite can last all day.

Finding perch schools

Yellow perch move in schools of similar-sized fish. Find one and you can catch dozens.

  1. Use electronics: look for fish hugging the bottom on flats and edges.
  2. Fish the transitions: weed edges, rock-to-sand, mud-to-gravel.
  3. Move if you're catching small fish: jumbo perch school separately.
  4. Follow the crowd in big lakes: on Lake Erie, perch boats often reveal the schools.

Best baits

Perch rigs

Use light line (4–8 lb) and a sensitive rod: perch bites can be light.

Ice fishing for perch

Perch are a top target for ice anglers:

Does the moon matter for perch?

Perch are sight feeders, so light matters more than the moon itself. Still, many anglers report better days around new and full moon when solunar majors fall in the morning or late afternoon. Read more in best moon phase for fishing.

Plan with Solunar

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and solunar windows on one 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating for your exact spot on the lake, offline (even on the ice). Plan your session around the rating and the morning or late-afternoon window.
