Crappie fishing in winter: depth, brush piles, baits and the best times

Crappie fishing in winter: what depth crappie hold at in cold water, how to find them on brush piles and channels, the best jigs and minnows, time of day, top lakes and the moon.

Crappie don't stop biting in winter. They school up, which means the hard part is finding them, and the easy part is catching a limit once you do. Winter crappie fishing is about electronics, depth control and slow presentations. Here's the playbook.

Where crappie go in winter

When water cools below about 50°F, crappie leave shallow cover and move to deeper, stable water:

Crappie often suspend: they hang at a specific depth, not on the bottom. The key is fishing exactly at, or slightly above, their depth.

What depth for winter crappie?

Water temperature Typical depth Notes
50–45°F 10–20 ft Moving from creeks to channel edges
45–40°F 15–30 ft Brush on channel ledges, suspended schools
Below 40°F 20–40 ft Tightly schooled, very slow bite

Depths vary by lake clarity: in clear lakes crappie go deeper, in stained water shallower.

Techniques that work in cold water

  1. Vertical jigging directly over brush piles. Drop to the depth, hold still, twitch.
  2. Slip bobber set to the right depth over brush: perfect for minnows from the bank or a dock.
  3. Spider rigging (multiple rods from the bow) to slow-troll across flats and channels.
  4. Forward-facing sonar (live sonar) to find and target single fish or schools: it has changed winter crappie fishing.
  5. Dock shooting in southern lakes on sunny afternoons.

Move slowly. In cold water, crappie won't chase a fast lure.

Best time of day

In winter the bite usually improves from late morning through mid-afternoon, when the sun warms the upper water a little. Cloudy, stable days can be good all day. A sudden cold front can make fish drop deeper and turn off for a day or two. Compare with spring and summer in best time to fish for crappie.

Crappie and the moon

Crappie are known for evening and night bites under lights in warm months. In winter, moon phase matters less than water temperature, but many anglers note a better bite in the days around the new and full moon, especially when a solunar major falls in the afternoon warm-up. Plan with Solunar

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and solunar periods on a 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating for your lake, even offline. In winter, aim for the days with a strong midday or afternoon window.
