Black drum fishing tips: winter and spring runs, best baits, rigs, tides and where to fish

Black drum fishing tips for Texas, Louisiana, Florida, the Carolinas and the Chesapeake Bay: when big drum school up, best baits (crab, shrimp, clams), rigs, tides and moon, structure, and the difference between puppy drum and bull drum.

Black drum are the heavyweights of the inshore world. Small "puppy drum" are great eating and easy to catch around docks and oyster bars, while big "bull" black drum over 30 pounds give long, heavy fights in passes and bays. They feed on the bottom, crushing crabs and clams, and bite well even in cold weather. These black drum fishing tips will help you catch both.

Where to fish

Black drum live along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts:

When to fish for black drum

Period What happens
Winter (Dec–Feb) Drum gather in deep channels, bays and passes; big schools in Texas and Louisiana
Late winter–spring (Feb–Apr) Spawning run: big bull drum in passes, jetties and inlets along the Gulf and Florida
Spring (Apr–May) Bull drum run in the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay
Summer Smaller fish around structure, docks and flats
Fall Drum feed heavily in bays and marshes before winter

Big black drum spawn in late winter and early spring in the Gulf, which makes this the best time for a trophy.

Where they feed

Best baits

  1. Blue crab: cut into halves or quarters. The best bait for big drum.
  2. Shrimp: live, dead or peeled. Great for puppy drum.
  3. Clams: fresh clams are deadly in the Chesapeake and the Carolinas.
  4. Sand fleas in the surf.
  5. Fishbites or similar synthetic baits as a backup.

Black drum find food by smell and touch: fresh, smelly bait on the bottom is the key.

Rigs

Circle hooks hook drum in the corner of the mouth and make release easy. Let the fish pull and reel tight; don't jerk.

Tides, time of day and moon

Puppy drum vs. bull drum

Many states set slot limits that protect large drum. Check your state's regulations before keeping any fish.

Black drum vs. redfish

Black drum and redfish are related and often feed in the same places. Redfish have a spot at the tail and a bronze color; black drum have barbels on the chin and a tall, gray-black body. Learn more in our redfish fishing tips.

Practical tips

  1. Be patient: drum bites can be slow, a heavy tap or a steady pull.
  2. Use strong gear in passes: a medium-heavy rod and 30–50 lb braid.
  3. Handle big fish carefully and support their weight for photos.
  4. Check your state's slot and bag limits before you go.

Plan with Solunar

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and solunar windows on one 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating, for your exact pass or pier, offline. Combine it with your tide chart: a strong rating with an incoming tide is the time to soak a crab.
