Bluegill fishing tips: best time to fish for bluegill, spawn and baits

Bluegill fishing tips that catch more and bigger fish: the best time to fish for bluegill by season and hour, the spawn and full moon, baits, rigs and where to look.

Bluegill are the fish most Americans caught first, and they are still one of the most fun to target: they live in nearly every pond, lake and slow river from Minnesota to Florida, they fight hard for their size, and they are excellent to eat. Catching a few is easy. Catching a cooler of big "bull" bluegill takes timing.

Best time of year for bluegill

Season Water temp What bluegill do
Early spring 50–60°F Move from deep water to warming shallows on sunny days
Late spring (spawn) about 67–75°F Males fan beds in 1–6 ft of water; colonies on sand and gravel
Summer 75°F+ Repeated spawns; big fish go to weed edges and deeper flats
Fall cooling Feed actively on weed lines before winter
Winter cold / ice Schools suspend deep; great ice-fishing target

The spawn is the best time to fish for bluegill. In the South it can start in April; in the Midwest and Northeast it usually peaks from late May to June. Bluegill often spawn in waves through the summer, so a second and third round of beds is common in Texas, Georgia and Florida ponds.

Bluegill and the full moon

Many anglers notice that bluegill bed most heavily around the full moon in late spring and early summer, and research on sunfish has described lunar spawning cycles. In practice: when the water is near 70°F, the days leading up to the full moon are worth circling on the calendar. The 2027 dates are in our full moon calendar 2027.

Outside of the spawn, use the daily solunar windows as a timing guide. A major period in mid-morning or late afternoon is a great time to work a weed edge. See how to read solunar tables.

Where to find bluegill

Look for bed colonies on sunny days with polarized glasses: dozens of light, round depressions in shallow sand. Big males sit on the edges.

Baits and rigs

Tips for bigger bluegill

  1. Move on from small fish. If you only catch 4-inchers, change spots; big fish rarely mix with small ones.
  2. Fish slightly deeper than everyone else, especially in summer.
  3. Upsize the bait a little to discourage small fish.
  4. Keep a few, release the biggest males on the beds to protect the population. Check your state's creel limits.
  5. Go back to the same water at the same moon phase: colonies often reuse beds.

Bluegill and other panfish

Bluegill share water with crappie, perch and bass. If the bluegill shut down, switch: best time to fish for crappie has the timing for their spawn, which comes earlier in spring. Pike and bass also cruise bluegill colonies, so keep a bigger rod ready (see pike fishing tips).

Plan with Solunar

The Solunar app shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase and the day's solunar windows on a 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating, calculated offline from your exact pond or lake. When the water hits 70°F and the full moon is near, you'll know which mornings to block out.
