Fishing at night: best moon phase, species, hours and safety

A practical guide to fishing at night: which fish bite after dark, the best hours and moon phases, lights, baits and lures, safety, and how to plan a night trip with solunar windows.

Some of the biggest fish of the year are caught after dark. Water cools, boat traffic disappears and large predators that hide all day come shallow to feed. Fishing at night isn't harder than fishing by day, but it rewards a plan: the right species, the right hours and the right moon.

Why fish bite at night

Which fish to target after dark

Species Why at night Where
Catfish Feed by smell and touch, most active from dusk to past midnight River channels, holes below dams, flats next to deep water
Walleye Eyes made for low light, push onto shallow flats and rocks Rocky points, wind-blown shorelines, weed edges
Largemouth bass Big summer bass feed shallow when the sun goes down Docks, grass edges, points near deep water
Crappie Gather under lights where plankton and minnows collect Bridges, lighted docks, brush piles
Trout Big brown trout hunt at night, especially in summer Pools and tailouts on rivers, shallow bays on lakes
Striped bass and inshore saltwater Follow bait under lights and on tide changes Bridges, piers, jetties, surf

The best hours

Night fishing isn't one window, it's three:

  1. Last light to full dark (about 1 hour). The transition is usually the best bite of the night. Be set up before sunset.
  2. The first hours of darkness. Predators keep feeding as long as bait is active, often until 11 pm–midnight.
  3. The pre-dawn hour. A second, shorter push often comes before first light.

The middle of the night can be slow, unless a solunar major falls there. A major period is when the moon is overhead or underfoot: if it lands at 1 am, that is when you want a bait in the water. See major vs minor periods.

Best moon phase for night fishing

Anglers argue about this every summer. A practical summary:

The bigger effect is moonrise and moonset: they are minor periods, and a moonrise right after sunset is a classic night window. More in best moon phase for fishing and the moon dates for 2026–2027.

Safety checklist

Plan a night trip in 3 steps

  1. Pick a night near a new or full moon with stable or slowly falling pressure.
  2. Look for a solunar major or moonrise between sunset and midnight.
  3. Arrive an hour before sunset, fish the transition, then the window.

Solunar shows sunset, moonrise and every window on one dial, offline, from your exact position, so you know which hour of the night to stay for.
