Hog hunting at night: moon phase, thermal and red lights, baiting and the best times

Hog hunting at night: why feral hogs go nocturnal, the best moon phases and hours, thermal, night vision and lights, baiting and feeders, top states like Texas and Florida, and legal rules.

Feral hogs are smart, destructive and, under hunting pressure, almost completely nocturnal. That's why hog hunting at night has become one of the most popular forms of hunting in the South. Done right, it's also one of the most effective ways to help landowners control a pest that causes billions of dollars in damage. Here's how to do it.

Why hogs move at night

Hogs have few sweat glands and overheat easily, so in warm weather they bed in thick, wet cover during the day and feed after dark. Add hunting pressure, and they shift even further into the night. In winter, on cold days, they can move more in daylight, but nighttime is when most hogs are on their feet across the Southern states.

Where you can hunt hogs at night

Feral hogs are classified as invasive or nuisance animals in most states, and many allow year-round hunting, including at night, on private land. Rules vary a lot:

Best moon phase for hog hunting

This is where night hunters disagree, and both sides have a point:

Moon What to expect
Full moon More natural light for you to see, but hogs can see you too; on pressured land they may feed later or in thicker cover
New moon Very dark: hogs feel safe and often come out earlier; you need thermal or lights
Moonrise and moonset Many hunters see a burst of activity around these times, matching solunar minor periods

The best strategy: hunt the hours around solunar periods after dark, whatever the phase. A major period at 10 p.m. on a cool night is a great time to be on the feeder. Read more in our guide to wild boar hunting and the moon.

Best time of night

Cool fronts and light rain often trigger strong movement.

Baiting and feeders

Where legal, corn is the classic bait. Soured corn (fermented in water) carries scent much farther. Tips:

  1. Bait consistently at the same time so hogs build a routine.
  2. Use a trail camera to learn when the sounder arrives.
  3. Set up downwind: hogs have an incredible nose.
  4. Shoot the sow first if you want to control the population: that's what landowners need.

Plan with Solunar

Solunar shows sunset, moonrise, moonset, moon phase and solunar windows on one 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating for your exact location, offline. You see at a glance whether tonight's major period falls at 9 p.m. or 3 a.m.
