Fishing forecasts promise to tell you if the fish will bite. Most of them combine the same handful of inputs into a score. Once you know what's inside, you can read any forecast critically, and build a better one for your own water.
| Input | Why it matters | What "good" usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Barometric pressure | Fish often feed ahead of a front and slow down after it | Stable, or slowly falling before a front |
| Wind | Pushes baitfish, adds oxygen and chop, breaks up light | Light to moderate, blowing into your bank |
| Air and water temperature | Fish are cold-blooded; temperature sets their metabolism | Stable or warming in spring, cooling in late summer |
| Cloud cover and light | Low light makes many predators bolder | Overcast, or dawn and dusk on sunny days |
| Rain | Cuts light, washes food in, changes clarity | Light rain or the period just after it |
| Tides (saltwater) | Moving water moves bait | The first hours of a running tide |
| Moon and solunar windows | Traditionally linked to feeding peaks | Major/minor periods, especially near sunrise or sunset |
Each input has its own deep-dive: barometric pressure, fishing in the rain, tides and solunar, moon phases.
Most apps show a number or a few fish icons. Treat it as a ranking, not a promise:
That's a fishing forecast built for your exact spot, not a city 40 km away.
The same forecast reads differently for different fish. Bass and pike love a pre-front afternoon; catfish feed best at night in warm water; trout like cool, overcast days. See the species guides: bass, catfish, trout, crappie.
The weather part of a forecast is only reliable a few days out. The astronomical part is known years ahead. Plan the month with a solunar calendar, then confirm with the forecast the week you go.
