Goose hunting tips: decoys, calling, blinds, weather and the best times

Goose hunting tips for Canada geese and snow geese: scouting fields, decoy spreads, calling, layout blinds, best weather and time of day, migration timing by flyway, and the moon.

Goose hunting rewards preparation. The hunters who limit out consistently aren't lucky: they scout, set up exactly where birds want to be and hide better than everyone else. Whether you chase resident Canadas in September or migrating birds in December, these goose hunting tips cover the steps that matter.

Know your geese

Species Where and when
Canada goose (resident) Across the US, all year; early September seasons target them
Canada goose (migrant) Arrive from Canada October–December, push south with cold fronts
Cackling goose Smaller cousin of the Canada, mostly in the Central and Pacific flyways
Snow and Ross's geese Huge flocks in the Central and Mississippi flyways, plus the spring conservation order
White-fronted goose ("specklebelly") Central and Mississippi flyways; Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas are hotspots

Seasons, bag limits and shooting hours are set by each state within federal frameworks. You need a state license, a federal duck stamp and HIP certification.

Scouting is everything

The single most important goose hunting tip: hunt where the geese were feeding yesterday.

  1. Drive and glass in the afternoon to find feeding fields (cut corn, soybeans, winter wheat).
  2. Note the exact spot where the flock landed, not just the field.
  3. Find the roost (lakes, rivers, reservoirs) and the flight lines between roost and field.
  4. Get permission from the landowner the same day.

Geese often return to the same field the next morning. Set up on the "X" and you're halfway there.

Decoy spreads

Blinds and concealment

Geese have excellent eyesight. Most flare at the last moment because of what they see on the ground:

Calling

Calling helps, but bad calling hurts more than no calling. Learn the basics:

For snow geese, electronic callers are legal only during the spring conservation order in most states.

Best weather and time of day

Shot and guns

A 12-gauge with 3" or 3½" non-toxic loads (steel BB, BBB or T, or tungsten) is standard. Let birds commit and shoot inside 40 yards: the most common mistake is shooting too early.

Does the moon matter?

Many waterfowlers believe full moons lead to more night feeding, especially in clear weather, which can mean geese leave the roost later or skip the morning flight. When a full moon coincides with poor morning action, an afternoon field hunt or a midday hunt often saves the day. Read more about moon phases and feeding.

Plan with Solunar

Solunar shows sunrise, sunset, moon phase, moonrise and solunar windows on one 24-hour dial with a 1–4 star day rating, for your exact field, offline. Check legal shooting time and the moon before you set your alarm.
