Walleye fishing tips: best time of day, season, spawn and moon
Walleye fishing tips that work: the best time to fish for walleye by hour and season, spawn temperatures, walleye chop, night fishing, full moon trolling and where to find them.
Walleye are built for low light. Their eyes have a reflective layer (the tapetum lucidum) that gives them the edge over baitfish at dusk, at night and in stained water. Almost every good walleye tip comes back to that: fish when and where the light is low.
Best time of day for walleye
Dusk to the first hours of darkness: the most consistent bite. Walleye move up onto shallow flats, points and rock to feed.
Dawn: a strong but shorter window.
Midday: walleye drop deeper or hold in weeds and shade. Fish deeper structure, or wait for clouds and wind.
Night: in clear lakes and in fall, night is often the best time of all. Trolling shallow crankbaits along rocky shorelines after dark is a classic.
Walleye spawn on gravel and rock in rivers and wind-swept shorelines. Many states have closed seasons or special rules.
Late spring
50–60°F
Post-spawn fish feed hard. Jigs and minnows, slip bobbers, shallow cranks.
Summer
60–75°F
Walleye go deeper: mid-lake humps, reefs, weed edges. Bottom bouncers and crawler harnesses; trolling. Low-light hours and night.
Fall
cooling
Big fish feed heavily on baitfish. Night trolling and jigging on rocky points and river mouths. Trophy season.
Winter (ice)
—
First ice and late ice are best. Dawn and dusk windows. See ice fishing tips.
Weather: walleye chop and clouds
"Walleye chop": a light to moderate wind that ruffles the surface cuts light penetration and pushes baitfish to wind-blown shorelines. Fish the windward side.
Overcast days extend the morning and evening bite through the day.
Stable weather beats bluebird skies after a cold front, when walleye tighten to the bottom and get picky. Slow down and downsize then. More in barometric pressure and fishing.
Stained water acts like permanent low light: walleye bite all day in muddy rivers.
Walleye and the moon
Many walleye anglers, especially on big lakes like Lake Erie, swear by full moon nights for trolling: the bright moon lets walleye hunt suspended baitfish in open water. On dark new-moon nights, fish tend to stay closer to structure and shallow rocks.
The daily solunar windows matter too: a major period around dusk is the best combination. When moonrise falls near sunset, many anglers see a strong evening bite. See best moon phase for fishing and the 2026–2027 moon dates.
Where to find walleye
Walleye relate to structure and edges: rock points, gravel bars, weed edges, river current seams, the edge of the first drop-off. Famous fisheries include Lake Erie, Lake of the Woods, Mille Lacs, Devils Lake, the Missouri River reservoirs and the Bay of Quinte, but the same rules apply on any walleye lake.
Lures and techniques
Jig and minnow: the all-around walleye presentation, especially in spring and fall.
Crawler harness / spinner rig behind a bottom bouncer in summer.
Shallow-running crankbaits and stickbaits for night trolling.
Slip bobber with a leech over rock humps.
Blade baits and jigging raps in cold water.
Quick plan
Pick a day with light wind or clouds.
Fish dusk into the first hours of dark.
Prefer days when a solunar major or moonrise lands near sunset.
Solunar shows the 30-day forecast, moonrise, sunset and every window from your exact spot, offline: handy on big water with no signal.
