Best time to go fishing: time of day, season, moon and weather

When is the best time to go fishing? A complete guide by time of day, month and season, moon phase, tides and weather, with species tips for US anglers.

Ask ten anglers when the best time to go fishing is and you will hear "early morning", "right before a storm" and "whenever you can get out". They are all partly right. Fish feed when light, temperature, food and water movement line up, and those things follow patterns you can plan around: the hour, the season, the moon and the weather.

If you only want to decide about today, use our five-minute best time to fish today checklist. This guide is the bigger picture: how to choose the best hours, months and days across the whole year.

Best time of day to go fishing

Time Why it works Best for
First light to 2 hours after sunrise Low light, cool water, baitfish move shallow Bass, trout, walleye, redfish, stripers
Mid-morning Water warms in spring and fall Cold-water days, crappie, bluegill
Midday Bright sun pushes fish deep or into shade Deep structure, docks, current; winter afternoons
2 hours before sunset to dark The most consistent window of the day Almost every freshwater species
Night Cooler water, cover of darkness Catfish, walleye, summer bass, stripers

The rule of thumb: in summer, fish the edges of the day; in winter, fish the warmest part of the day. A cold January lake in Ohio often fishes best from 1 to 4 p.m., while a July pond in Texas may be dead by 9 a.m.

Best season to go fishing

Best moon phase and solunar windows

Solunar theory predicts more activity during major periods (moon overhead or underfoot, about 2 hours) and minor periods (moonrise and moonset, about 1 hour). The days around new and full moon usually rate highest. You can read the logic in what is solunar theory and compare phases in best moon phase for fishing.

The strongest plan is to stack signals: a major period that overlaps sunrise or sunset, on a day near new or full moon, with stable weather. All 2027 dates are in our full moon calendar 2027.

Be honest about what the moon can do: it is a timing layer, not a guarantee. A cold front will beat a four-star solunar day every time.

Weather: the factor that overrides everything

Tides in saltwater

On the coast, moving water matters more than the clock. The last two hours of the incoming tide and the first of the outgoing are classics for redfish, stripers and flounder. New and full moons bring stronger tides and stronger currents. Read tides and solunar for saltwater fishing and surf fishing tips.

Best time by species (quick view)

Species Best hours Best season
Largemouth bass Dawn, dusk, night in summer Spring pre-spawn, fall
Crappie Morning, dusk Spring spawn, fall
Bluegill Mid-morning to afternoon Late spring spawn
Catfish Night, dusk Summer
Trout Morning, evening hatches Spring, fall
Walleye Dusk into dark Spring, fall
Redfish Moving tide, dawn Fall
Striped bass Night, dawn, tide changes Spring and fall runs

A simple yearly plan

  1. Learn the seasonal pattern of your main species and water.
  2. Each week, pick days near new or full moon with stable or slowly falling pressure.
  3. On those days, fish the window that overlaps sunrise or sunset.

The Solunar app puts all of this on one 24-hour dial: sunrise and sunset, moonrise and moonset, major and minor windows and a 1–4 star day rating, calculated offline from your exact location, so it works at the ramp with no signal.
